A contemporary soul singer whose smooth yet rich vocals brought emotion and energy even to his most serene recordings, Gerald LeVert grew up in the shadows of his father, Eddie LeVert, Sr., of the O’Jays.

James Travis Tritt (born February 9, 1963) is an American country music singer from Marietta, Georgia. He signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1989, releasing seven studio albums and a greatest hits package for the label between then and 1999. In the 2000s, he released two albums on Columbia Records and one for the defunct Category 5 Records.

Seven of his albums (counting the Greatest Hits) are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); the highest-certified is 1991′s “It’s All About to Change”, which is certified triple-platinum. R.E.M. is different in that they are very much still the group of friends from Athens, Georgia that they have been since the band formed back in 1979. While they have successfully completed 15 studio albums and huge global success throughout their career, the band itself only ever comprised the four original members.

The only person though to leave this solid group was drummer Bill Berry, who, retired a couple of years after having aneurysm on-stage during 1995′s “Monster” tour. But not before getting a promise from his bandmates that they would still go on as R.E.M.: “Bill insisted he would stay, if his leaving meant breaking the band up,” says Michael Stipe.

They shocked the rock world by announcing a wholly unexpected R.E.M. breakup. “As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band,” read calmly expressed statement on their website. “We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

If this was a sudden halt years ago when they really did seem to be running on fumes, everyone would have taken the news as it is and speculated appreciatively, quietly guzzling beers incrementally in their honor. The news of the R.E.M. breakup – all the calmness has clearly disturbed many. They even had moments (and not-so-well-received albums) which many bands would break up on.

But jaws dropped at the news, the R.E.M. breakup apparently stirred NOT the curiosity, but mainly raised questions. Fans and even the non-R.E.M. fans can only accept the news.

R.E.M. was on a roll that many bands aren’t supposed to experience going into their second decade together, much less their fourth. The highly-charged “Accelerate” earned the kind of “return to form” reviews veteran bands would give a tired limb for; likewise for its follow-up, “Collapse Into Now” which was released just March of last year.

Even more curiously, for the conspiracy theorists among us, the announcement comes just days after lead singer Michael Stipe posted nude photos of himself on his Tumblr page. Could that have somehow, being a band instigated a major squabble over Skype? Or perhaps it was just evidence of an overall midlife crisis that also precipitated the split?

Not long after the group statement went up, individual members went onto R.E.M.’s website to go into slightly more detail about the breakup (but not exactly the nude photos).
